Chief J.M BAROVBE JP
B.A (Hons) MBA. MBIM
Administrative Director
A WELCOME ADDRESS PRESENTED BY
CHIEF JOHNSON MODIKA BAROVBE JP
MANAGING DIRECTOR, WESTMINSTER COLLEGE LAGOS,
ON THE OCCASSION OF THE 6TH GRADUATION AND
VALEDICTORY SERVICE ON
24TH JULY 2008
The Deputy Governor, Her
Excellency Mrs Adebisi S. Sosan, ably represented by Mrs Bunmi Salako, Your
Royal Highness, Oba S. O. Balogun, The Elegbeda of Egbeda Land, Chairman, Board
of Governors, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode, OFR, members, Board of Governors,
Distinguished guests, parents, teachers and students, Ladies and Gentlemen, I
wish to welcome you all to the 6th Graduation ceremony of our 2008 graduating
students. I could remember vividly the first graduation ceremony in July 2003
at which the first seven foundation students graduated from the college with
dignity.
On that day I told the seven
students that we would monitor their academic or educational progress for the
next six years for experimental purposes. As at today four out of the seven
students have graduated from various universities, two of the remaining three
will graduate in 2009, if there are no long time strikes in the Nigeria public
universities. The last of the seven students ended up with GCE advance level
and took up a good job. The four that have graduated, all came out in second
class upper division and two of them are now pursuing their master degrees,
one at Cardiff University for an MBA and the other at Birmingham University for
an M.Sc in Engineering and both of them will complete their courses by September
2008.
As I have said before, the
first graduation ceremony was for seven students but today I am delighted and
elated to announce to you that 38 humble but vibrant, strong and intelligent
class of students will pass out of the college today 24th July 2008.
It is the policy of
Westminster College Lagos to train students and also seek for admission and
place the students in ‘Good Universities’ in the premier league both in Nigeria,
Ghana, the UK, Canada, USA and South America. Why we emphasis the good
universities in the premier league, is that most of the time, adults revered the
name of the universities where they studied. For example, in the UK the ranking
of
Universities are displayed on
‘The Times Good University’ website and I do advise that Nigerian parents who
are sending their children to study in the United Kingdom, paying such huge
amount of money in foreign currency, (between
£9,000
and £20,000
for tuition alone per annum) should be able to select from the Good Universities
ranking from 1 to 113 in ‘Times Good Universities’.
This year some parents of the
2008 graduating students met with the college authority to look for admission in
overseas universities for their children, and I can pertinently say that eight
of the graduating students have already got unconditional offer of admission to
Queen Mary University of London, Universities of Bristol, University of
Liverpool, University of Reading and University of Leeds on the ‘International
Foundation Year’ courses in Law, Engineering and Biochemistry.
Another five of the
graduating students today are already out of the
college to start their
studies at various universities - Master Philip Nzegbuna at Chicago, USA, Miss
Yewande Akinrodoye at Maryland, USA, Miss Ulisa Isagbah left for Belize in
Central America, while Miss Gbemisola Babtunde at Olabisi Onabanjo University
and Master Ayenuyo Toyosi is already at Unilag studying medicine.
In effect about 75% of the 38
students who are graduating today are on their way to various universities in
August and September 2008. The majority of the students are going to Covenant
University Otta, Babcook University Ilisan, and Bowen University Iwo. I can
confidently say, that 90% of the graduating students have obtained the requisite
GCE Ordinary level paper qualifications to secure admission in any University of
their choice in any English speaking country.
You may ask why students from
Westminster College Lagos are so confident and sure of themselves academically?
The answer lies in the college curriculum and academic life. Here in
Westminster College, we believe that a child’s success in later life will be
greatly helped by academic qualifications, consequently in our teaching we go
further and deeper beyond the National Curriculum. The Westminster College
Lagos curriculum is all embracing, rich, varied, well balanced and as wide as
possible and by the time a student gets to the fifth year or senior secondary 2
(SS 2) he or she has covered enough ground to cleverly pass Cambridge
International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) WAEC or NECO
GCE with high grades (A - C). By the time a student who is above average
finishes from our senior secondary school here, he or she has covered some good
parts of GCE advance level, especially in Mathematics, Biology, Physics and
Chemistry.
As I always say, we in
Westminster College Lagos believe in hard work, because the college is conscious
of its responsibility to parents, many of whom make considerable sacrifice to
send their children here.
For the high level of
academic work and discipline, I want to thank all the teachers especially, Mr
Stanley Echetama, N.C.E., B.Sc., Biology, .Mr
Ashe, B.A., MA History, Mr Odeyemi NCE., B.Sc., Agriculture, Mr Umoh B.A.,
English and and most importantly Mr Olowolaiyemo B.Sc., Physics and Mr Oladipupo
B.Sc., M.Sc., Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
During the last graduation
ceremony in July 2007, the highlight was on one of our parents who was elected
to the envious position of Deputy
Governor and now combines the
Ministry of Education with the Deputy
Governorship position, Her
excellency, Mrs Adebisi S. Sosan. But in today’s graduation ceremony, the
highlight is personal, I can say with humility mingled with joy that I have
gloriously reached the climax of my teaching career today 24th July 2008. You
can ask why I am so excited? The reason is simple, two of the graduating
students, Master Ejiro Ogidigbo and Master Voke Salubi, are children of my
students whom I taught 43 years ago between 1964 and 1965, in the primary school
in Delta State. I taught Ejiro’s father and Voke’s mother. Incidentally, one of
the two students Master Ejiro Ogidigbo is also the Senior Prefect or Head boy of
the College.
To my graduating students, I
sincerely appeal to you to carry on all the good qualities of leadership you
learnt at Westminster College Lagos, such as loyalty, courage, emotional
stamina, physical stamina, empathy, decisiveness, anticipation, timing,
competitiveness, self-confidence, accountability, credibility, tenacity,
dependability, stewardship, humour and humility.
As you are going out remember
that you are from Westminster
College Lagos.
God bless you all.
CHIEF JOHNSON M. BAROVBE JP,
BA, MBA, MBIM.
